Speaker Profiles
Father Douglas Bazi
Fr Douglas Bazi was born in Baghdad, Iraq and works as a
Chaldean Catholic priest in Erbil. In November 2006, he was kidnapped by
extremist group Al Qaeda where he was tortured for nine days. During this time,
his back was damaged and his face and knees were beaten with a hammer. After
making a full recovery, Fr Bazi now runs the Mar Elias refugee centre in Erbil
and cares for thousands of displaced families.
Father Ziad Hilal SJ
Jesuit priest Fr Ziad Hilal worked with the late Fr Frans
van der Lugt in Homs and until earlier this year headed a pastoral centre in
the city of Homs providing medical assistance for those with physical
disabilities and education for youngsters with learning difficulties. Fr Ziad
was a project partner to Aid to the Church in Need in Homs, helping to provide
emergency and pastoral aid especially during the three-year siege of Homs where
Christians and others were trapped in the Old City.
Victoria Youhanna
Victoria, 16, was kidnapped along with her mother and five
brothers during an assault by Boko Haram in January 2015. She and her family
were able to escape unharmed a few days later after being left unattended by
the militants. Victoria has agreed to speak to ACN about her experiences of
persecution in Nigeria through her guardian and parish priest, Fr Gideon
Obasogie, who will act as her translator.
